The Service Area

The center of the area is Louisville itself, which has shared a single Metro government with Jefferson County since 2003. Requests arrive from every part of the county, from Crescent Hill in the east end to Valley Station in the southwest. Inside Jefferson County, MSD runs the sewers, so its rules on sump pumps and its 24/7 backup line, (502) 540-6000, apply.

Beyond the county line, requests also come in from Bullitt and Oldham counties. Rules shift a little from place to place: permit offices differ, and outside Jefferson County you deal with your own sewer utility rather than MSD. The town pages below spell out those local details.

Towns With Their Own Page

Five cities near Louisville get a page of their own, each with its permit office, local water notes and costs.

  • Jeffersontown, KY. About 11 miles east-southeast of downtown, with 29,193 people. It runs its own building department on Watterson Trail, which asks owners to call before repairs start. Chenoweth Run flows through the city.
  • St. Matthews, KY. About 6 miles east, once billed as the potato capital of the world. Louisville Metro issues permits here only after the city's Letter of Compliance, and contractors need a St. Matthews business license first.
  • Middletown, KY. About 12 miles east, founded in 1797 halfway to Shelbyville. City Hall sits in the Wetherby House, an old stagecoach stop, and the city issues a letter of compliance before Metro grants a permit.
  • Shepherdsville, KY. About 18 miles south and the Bullitt County seat. The Salt River passed 36 feet, four feet over flood stage, on April 7, 2025. Call City Hall at 502-543-2923 to ask who issues your permit.
  • La Grange, KY. About 23 miles northeast, the Oldham County seat, with a rail line down the middle of Main Street. Oldham County Buildings & Inspections handles building permits; plumbing goes through the state.

Shepherdsville and La Grange sit outside MSD's district, so homeowners there should ask their own sewer utility about backups and where a sump pump may discharge.

Check Before You Call

Plenty of homes sit just outside the towns listed above. If you live somewhere nearby, such as Prospect, Shively, Lyndon, Mount Washington, Crestwood or Shelbyville, run the area check first. It only takes a moment and saves you a call if there's no contractor taking requests near your address yet.

When the check comes back uncertain, phone (502) 555-0164 and ask. Either way there's nothing to pay: contractors may pay this site for advertising, and homeowners never pay or receive anything. This site doesn't visit, price or perform any basement work; the contractor who gets your request handles all of that.
