Pumps, Pits and Discharge Lines

A sump system has three working parts. The pit is a lined hole cut into a low corner of the floor, where water from under the slab or from a wall drain collects. The pump sits in that pit and switches on as the level climbs. The discharge pipe lifts the water up, through the wall and out into the yard.

Not all of that water starts on the roof. U.S. Geological Survey wells under downtown showed the water table climbing up to 32 feet in the mid-1970s. In April 2025, MSD counted more than seven inches of rain in five days, a stretch that keeps a pump busy.

Where the water ends up matters too. MSD, the Louisville and Jefferson County Metropolitan Sewer District, says a basement sump pump may never be connected to the sewer. That hookup is illegal, and MSD adds a $75 monthly surcharge to the wastewater bill until it comes out. Any change to the plumbing belongs with a Kentucky-licensed plumber.

When Homeowners Ask for Sump Pump Installation

  • A first pump. Cutting the slab, setting a lined pit and adding a pump where there has never been one.
  • Swapping a tired pump. Replacing a unit that hums, short-cycles or quit in the last downpour, often reusing the old pit.
  • A check valve. A one-way valve that stops water in the pipe from dropping back into the pit each time the motor shuts off.
  • Battery backup and an alarm. A second pump for power outages, plus an alarm if the water climbs too high.
  • Rerouting the discharge. Sending the outlet well clear of the foundation, and never into the sewer.

What It Usually Costs

Waterproof paint or sealant, per sq ft$1 to $8Fixr national (2026)

A swap in an existing pit sits near the bottom of the sump row; a new pit with a backup sits higher. All rows are national, not Louisville quotes, and the cost guide explains what moves a price.

What Happens on Job Day

  1. You describe the basement. Note where water pools and how often any pump runs.
  2. One contractor follows up. That single independent contractor sets a time to come by.
  3. The pit spot gets picked. Usually the lowest corner, near an outside wall.
  4. A written estimate arrives. It names the pump model, liner, check valve, any backup and the exact discharge route.
  5. Permits get sorted out. A new circuit may need an electrical permit, and plumbing work needs a Kentucky-licensed plumber and a state permit. Building questions go to Louisville Metro Construction Review, (502) 574-3321.
  6. The pump is tested. Ask to watch a bucket of water fill the pit and trip the switch, then repeat that check every few months.

Why Start With One Request

One short request here costs you nothing, and nobody hands you a payment or gift for sending it. Contractors may pay this site to advertise. The site sells no pumps, never visits and sets no prices.

Before hiring, find out whose license the contractor carries, since Metro, Jeffersontown, Shepherdsville and Oldham County each keep their own, and call that office to confirm. Get proof of liability coverage and workers' comp, a name for whoever does the plumbing, and a written contract with payments tied to finished stages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my sump pump empty into a floor drain or the sewer?

Not in Jefferson County. MSD treats a sump pump tied into the sewer as an illegal connection and adds a $75 monthly surcharge until it's removed. If you think yours runs into the sewer now, call MSD at (502) 540-6000, and have a Kentucky-licensed plumber make any change to the pipes.

Is a battery backup worth adding?

It depends on how hard your main pump works and how often storms cut power on your street. A backup takes over when the first pump fails or loses power. Ask for prices with and without one.

What does the check valve do?

It keeps water already in the discharge pipe from falling back into the pit when the pump stops. Without one, the pump moves the same water again and again and wears out sooner. It's an inexpensive part that's easy to leave off, so look for it on the estimate.

Is a sump pump the same thing as a sewage ejector?

No. A sump pump moves clear groundwater outside. An ejector lifts wastewater from a basement bathroom or laundry into the sewer line, which makes it plumbing. In Kentucky that work needs a state-licensed plumber and a state plumbing permit, so ask who would take on that part.
